Origin
and nature of the Mexican Health Foundation
(Spanish acronym FUNSALUD)
Introduction and mission
In May 1985 a group of Mexican entrepreneurs interested in contributing
to their country’s development created the Mexican Health
foundation (Spanish acronym FUNSALUD).
FUNSALUD is a private, autonomous philanthropic institution at
the service of the community. It is listed in the National Registry
of Scientific and Technological Institutions and Businesses of
the National Counsel for Science and Technology. FUNSALUD is recognized
by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit as a donee authorized
to receive donations and issue tax-deductible receipts and participate
in the Public Debt Exchange Program to Support Projects with High
Social Impact, instruments which the Mexican government makes
available to help non-profit philanthropic organizations fulfill
their missions.
FUNSALUD’s mission is to help improve the health of Mexico’s
inhabitants by supporting scientific research, healthcare policies,
and preparation of top level professionals.
Since its founding, FUNSALUD has worked with a group of entrepreneurs
committed to social issues, with professionals specializing in
the field of healthcare.
FUNSALUD’s efforts to promote better health for Mexicans
were recognized by the American College of Physicians, which in
1998 awarded it the E. Loveland Award, the first time it was given
to a philanthropic institution outside the United States.
