Program
for strengthening nutrition as
a teaching
subject
at medical schools and faculties
in Mexico
Nutriología
Médica. Second Edititon
Contents
The
work is organized in 25 chapters
distributed through three parts:
 |
I.
Preventive and general
aspects
This
section opens with
a chapter describing
the epidemiological
panorama of nutrition
in Mexico.

In
it, the work of the general
doctor facing nutritional
problems among the Mexican
population is contextualized.
The next chapters analyse
nutrition in normal conditions
at different stages of the
individual's life cycle:
infancy, maturity, and senility.
As regards maturity, the
work is original in its
distinguishing the nutritional
processes of men and women.
An innovation from the first
edition is the inclusion
of a chapter on physical
activity, its physiological
bases, its relationship
with nutrition, and its
importance on health.

The
selection of topics covered
in this section was done
with the priority of nutrition
problems faced by the Mexican
population in mind. Energetic
and protein malnutrition
among children still affects
wide sectors of the population
and is the first chapter's
topic. Anaemia and secondary
effects of the nutrition
state are the topics dealt
with in the second and third
chapters. The next chapters
of the section deal with
new nutritional problems
in Mexico, including obesity,
cardiovascular disease,
and diabetes mellitus. Other
topics include hepatic and
renal diseases; their consequences
are analysed in these chapters.
This section concludes with
a chapter on nutrition support
and a chapter on the ethical
aspects of nutritional attention.

The
last section contains concepts,
methods, and supporting
instruments for practising
doctors. The chapters refer
to nutrients, food, the
design of a nourishment
plan, and the evaluation
of the nutritional state.
This section is enriched
with different growth and
development standards, as
well as norms for the clinical
evaluation of the nutritional
state.

Nutriología
Médica (Medical Nutriology)
is widely illustrated with colourful
tables and figures. Its format
is enriched with reproductions
of Mexican paintings that have
to do with the topics discussed.
Finally, being an initiative to
improve nutrition, the edition
of the book is the result of the
philanthropic labor of the editors,
the authors, and the Mexican Health
Foundation (FUNSALUD), made possible
by the Nestle Nutrition Fund.
For those reasons, its price is
way below its actual cost.
